Tax Season 2012 is now officially open!

Yesterday, Tax Season 2012 was officially launched. Individual taxpayers can now submit their IT12 returns for the period 01 March 2011 to 29 February 2012. Individual tax returns can be filed through any of the following channels by the relevant deadlines:

Manual returns must be posted or delivered to your local SARS branch by 28 September 2012.

Non-provisional taxpayers can make use of eFiling until 23 November 2012.

Provisional taxpayers have until 31 January 2013 to submit electronic returns via eFiling.

If you did not get a copy of the Tax Season 2012 Guide published in the Sunday newspapers on 01 July 2012, visit http://www.sars.gov.za to download the electronic version. SARS will also be assisting taxpayers through a variety of channels this filing season to ensure tax returns are submitted accurately and on time with minimum effort. Watch this space for more information on the Help-You-eFile service that SARS will be launching. If your internet access is limited to your mobile phone, you will be glad to know that this year you can file through the brand new eFiling mobisite or the soon-to-be-launched eFiling App for smartphones and tablets.

After the first two weeks of Tax Season 2012, SARS already received more than 700 000 individual tax returns. Some of these returns had to be assessed manually due to incorrect source codes used by employers on IRP5 certificates. This problem once again highlights the importance of the Employers Filing Season and the effect that late and incorrect PAYE reconciliations have on the employees when individual tax returns are due.

The good news is that SARS is putting in a lot of effort to make it easier for indivduals to submit their income tax returns on time this year. One of their latest initiatives is the eFiling videos they have available on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/sarstax ) which shows you how to register as an eFiling user, how to complete your IT12 and how to submit supporting documents.

SARS is also in the process of releasing a new eFiling app that taxpayers can download on their smartphones or tablets. If you own a smartphone or tablet and are ready to submit your income tax return, why not join the test group and make use of the new eFiling app before it is officially released.
